For anyone who is a fan of ‘alien invasion’ movies, sci-fi in general, or just good-old storytelling, the original ‘V’ mini-series is an absolute classic. The story begins with the arrival of 50 gigantic spacecraft over 50 major cities around the world; a civilization of human-like beings have come to ask for our aid in saving their dying planet. Over the film’s 3+ hours, our ‘visitors’ go from friend to foe, and humanity faces the prospect of enslavement by a facist regime, not unlike in World War II, this time on a world-wide scale. V was (and still is) unique in its ability to weave together action and drama, along with some sci-fi elements, to create a ‘morality tale’ of sorts. I must admit, there were a couple of scenes that still leave me choked up. The mini-series debuted on NBC in the Spring of 1983 and was followed by an excellent sequel, ‘The Final Battle,’ a year later. Considering the date of release, it must be mentioned that the special effects are not up to current CGI standards - don’t come here expecting ‘Independence Day’, but there are some scenes that are still impressive, even by current standards. This was done back in the day when you had to build all your effects from scratch and there were no computers to fall back on!

On to the DVD release of ‘V’…I must say this right now: if you’re like me and you’ve seen V a hundred times already, you’re in for a shock when you get a look at this version. The colors are brilliant and everything is so sharply in focus…it makes my old VHS version seem like watching t.v. with plastic-wrap over the screen. It looks that good! The audio track has been completely remastered and the majority of the effects have been enhanced. Every laser blast, every explosion, the whoosh of a passing fighter…it’s all there, loud and clear, and in Dolby Stereo. A 25 minute ‘behind the scenes’ documentary is included, and while it won’t tell you anything new or shocking about V, it is intriguing and adds to the value of the disc. Last, but definitely not least, is the commentary track by writer/director Kenneth Johnson. This WILL tell you ‘new and shocking’ things and is definitely a major treat for those of us who are long-time fans.

I was about 9 years old in the Spring of ‘83 when the original V mini-series debuted on t.v. Needless to say, V left a major impact on me, as much as the original ‘Star Wars’ movie did, if not more. If you are a fan of V, you MUST purchase a copy of this - it’s like seeing the show again for the first time. On the other hand, if you’ve never seen V before, if you can deal with its early-80’s origins, it will no doubt move you like the rest of us.

As for myself, I have one thing to say: bring on ‘The Final Battle’ DVD, I’m ready!

P.S. Oh, and one more thing…why did Jane Badler’s name never become a household word? Aside from her being devastatingly gorgeous, not to mention her chilling portrayal of the evil alien leader ‘Diana’, one would have expected to see more of this talented actress later on in her career. There is no justice in this world!

Like many, I was a BIG fan of both the “V” mini-series as a kid. Though even as a kid I found the dumbed-down weekly series to be sub-par, which is ironic considering I was the target demographic NBC was looking for. In rewatching the mini-series’ as an adult it’s apparent that “V: The Final Battle,” while good, was also inferior to Ken Johnson’s original. It’s a shame he wasn’t allowed to guide the further installments, “V” would probably still be on the air today in some form.

I wanted to clear up some of the confusion I’m seeing in these postings. First of all there is no missing footage, the mini-series is not cut in half. This DVD is exactly what it is billed as, “V - The Original Mini-Series.” The original “V” was two parts which ran over two nights in 1983. It didn’t have an ending, it wasn’t really suppose to in order to tell its allegorical tale. The second mini-series, “V : The Final Battle” was three parts and aired over a year later. Both mini-series’ were syndicated to UHF stations in the late eighties. Those stations usually ran all five parts over a week, though heavily edited. That might be what’s confusing some. Considering this DVD has sold about four times better than Warner Bros. was expecting, I’d say it’s a sure bet “The Final Battle” will be released on DVD before too long.

As to the Gag Reel, sadly it’s not on the disc. It was supposed to be but unfortunately, Warner Bros. was unable to clear it for release. Too many of the actors wanted to be paid an additional fee for its inclusion on the disc. … just never updated the information. Hope that helps!

‘Constantine’ is based on the D.C./Vertigo title ‘Hellblazer’, which is excellent. Rather than compare the two, I’ll just rate it as a movie: John Constantine, who has managed to get himself locked out of Heaven and is so wanted by Hell that Kucifer himself refers to Constantine as the only soul he’d come up personally to get. You had to have done some serious wrongs to the devil in order to get that sort of attention. But the movie itself is pretty straightfoward - stop the devil’s son from being born on Earth, or we’ll all suffer for it. It’s in the details that this film is a little different than the rest. It’s got some new mythologies we haven’t heard before, some new tricks and some pretty cool villians (not all of whom are from Hell or Earth). As an added bonus you manage to feel something even for the ancillary characters, which is a fun bonus. Very nice F/X, especially Hell. Most of the acting is pretty goo, especially the character of Gabriel. Keanu is fine, even if he isn’t British.

It’s worth the admission.

Dreadfully flawed and with a muddled story line, “Constantine” is nevertheless worth watching, for its occasional profound and intense beauty, and its visions of hell and its denizens, which anyone who believes that forces of evil exist and influence our world will find fascinating. Loosely based on characters from the Hellblazer comics, the script is very interesting in parts, but the audio is abysmal. The dialog sounds as if it is coming from an underwater tunnel, and I had to watch the film with subtitles. Also, this is a film that begs to be seen several times, to make some sense of the muddle.

The cast is excellent, and I have always been partial to Keanu Reeves, who as John Constantine, a man dying of lung cancer, who can see, and has walked beyond this dimension, is very good in his own peculiar way. I can’t imagine anyone else of his generation playing the part. As he says of the cat in the film, he’s “half in, half out,” and Reeves also has that quality, of being in the world, but not quite of it. Rachel Weisz, who teamed with Reeves in the far less interesting 1996 “Chain Reaction,” is both Angela, a Los Angeles detective, and her twin sister Isabel. She looks gorgeous, and gives a sensitive, lovely performance. Others in the cast that stand out are Tilda Swinton as Gabriel, and Shia LaBeouf, as Chas, Constantine’s eager apprentice.

This is the feature directorial debut of Francis Lawrence, who has previously done music videos, and he certainly has an eye for bizarre imagery. The cinematography by Philippe Rousselot is terrific, and much of what is worthwhile in this film is due to him. It is hard to rate this film, as it is, like the battle of good and evil in the story, a mixture of opposites. Total running time is 121 minutes, it is rated R for “violence and demonic images,” but is comparatively mild in language and has no in-between the sheets action. The DVD extra is 18 minutes of deleted scenes.

The bonus material consists of 3 featurettes - a “Making Of”; a “Music Of”; and a “Secrets Of Animagic”. While it was enjoyable to see Arthur Rankin talking about the history of the film, I found it almost unforgivable that the two surviving stars (Phylis Diller and Gale Garnett) were not interviewed for this. Especially when footage of Phylis speaking about MMP already exists and only had to be purchased and tacked on. What’s even worse is that Gale Garnett’s name was not even mentioned, I kid you not! Every other person involved with the making of this movie was talked about except for the voice behind two songs in the film, and the most memorable character, Francesca. Apparently it was a legal issue, but one that should most definitely have been resolved.

Also included is the theatrical trailer which was present on the previous release but the TV spots and photo stills gallery which were on the original DVD were omitted from this one. This “Special Edition” has a better cover but the first DVD has much more attractive menus. If you are a Rankin/Bass fan, you will probably still want to pick up this new release (even if you already have the other one) but I do feel that more effort could have been put out to make this “Special Edition” more special.

Just watched the rough cuts and REALLY like what SPARKHILL did! GREAT editing and it makes you want to watch the film all over again! SCREEN NOVELTIES (Seamus and Mark) explain ANIMAGIC perfectly! MAURY LAWS gives some insight to his scoring in a seperate documentary about the soundtrack. Loved seeing ARTHUR RANKIN and DON DUGA talk about their parts and hearing ALLEN SWIFT do the voices again! You will not want to miss this 2009 edition!

John Carradine cameos as a bizarre fortune teller.

Unfortunately, even an excellent cast can’t save this sandy soaper from itself. Although the Technicolor cinematography is gorgeous, and Dietrich sports a new and more stunning gown for every desert occasion, viewers will find no oasis to qunch their thirst. Basically, this is a very early version of Hollywood’s “sex and sand” films, so popular in the 1950s–lush, unusual, and ultimately silly. –Mark Savary

Lou Diamond Phillips leaves a haunting impression as the late 1950s pop idol Ritchie Valens, who made the Latino influnce in rock & roll conspicuous through his hit songs. Filmmaker Luis Valdez (Zoot Suit) creates a nimble, exciting, and sympathetic portrait of the boy driven to rise above obstacles of race and family legacy, and Esai Morales is equally fine as Ritchie’s envious, searching brother. Great support from Elizabeth Pena and Danielle von Zerneck as Valens’s sister and mother, respectively, and Joe Pantoliano is solid as the singer’s straight-talking manager. Valdez brightens up the third act with a rock & roll show featuring, among others, Brian Setzer as Eddie Cochrane. Marshall Crenshaw turns up as Buddy Holly getting on that plane with Valens, and Los Lobos (who actually performs Valens’s music on the soundtrack) has a nifty cameo as a Tijuana band that gives Valens a piece of crucial inspiration. –Tom Keogh

Bats
This movie is for everyone who misses the old Roger Corman monster movies, only it has animatronics and computer effects instead of papiermache. The title of Bats pretty much sums up the plot: Crazed bats are running amok, disemboweling people and cattle. Only beautiful wildlife zoologist Dina Meyer (Johnny Mnemonic, Starship Troopers) and stalwart sheriff Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba, the Young Guns movies, Courage Under Fire) can save the day! Let’s be frank: The scenario is ludicrous, the dialogu God-awful, the special effects unconvincing–try as they might, the bats just aren’t that scary–but what does it matter? The movie rips along effectively. There’s always a bat attack just around the corner and the director makes liberal use of all kinds of editing and camera effects, including a distorted bat-cam point of view that makes no sense at all but is pretty entertaining. Various scenes imitate Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, but lack even a hint of that movie’s eerie precision. The actors play it straight without trying to be particularly serious. All in all, Bats knows what it is–trash-horror–and accomplishes its ends with good humor. Not quite up to the standard of Tremors (still the definitive trash-horror flick), but better than most recent efforts. –Bret Fetzer

The Big Hit
Film fans might someday recognize 1997 and ‘98 as the years Hong Kong came to Hollywood. Stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li, and Michelle Yeoh all appeared in major Hollywood projects and directors John Woo, Ronny Yu, and Tsui Hark directed Face/Off, Bride of Chucky, and Knock Off, respectively. Another entry into this new era of entertainment is The Big Hit, directed by Che-Kirk Wong (who also directed Jackie Chan in Crime Story), executive produced by John Woo, and produced by Wesley Snipes. Mark Wahlberg leads this all-American cast in a played-for-laughs macho blowout. Rounding out the testosterone brigade are Lou Diamond Phillips (sprouting a gold-capped tooth and a dirty mouth), Bokeem Woodbine, Antonio Sabato Jr., and Avery Brooks. Wahlberg plays Melvin Smiley, a nice-guy hit man with an ulcer and a severe insecurity problem. He’s short on cash du to the spending habits of his unsuspecting fiancee Pam (Christina Applegate) and his girlfriend-on-the-sly Chantel (Lela Rochon). He and his crew decide to do a little freelancing and cook up their own heist to make a little mo’ money–specifically by kidnapping Keiko (China Chow), the daughter of a Japanese businessman whom they target for ransom. Little do they know her dad is broke and she’s the goddaughter of their boss. The Big Hit has action scenes aplenty (one of the stunt coordinators worked on Woo’s The Killer and Bullet in the Head) and the same cornball sense of humor as other films in the Hong Kong action genre. Slick pacing and over-the-top humor made this movie a miss with the critics but a fun ride for fans of Hong Kong-styled action. –Shannon Gee
